Expired Domain Name Policy
This article provides detailed information about the process for handling expired domain names, specifically for .com
domain names. The policies and timelines outlined here do not apply to ccTLD or gTLD domain names.
What Happens After Domain Names Expire?
When a domain name expires, it goes through several stages before being released back to the general public. Microvera Ltd. ensures a transparent process and sends two renewal emails to the Registered Name Holder prior to the expiration date.
If the registrant pays the renewal invoice before the expiration date, the domain is automatically renewed.
Stages of an Expired Domain Name
Days After Expiration | Action |
---|---|
Day 0 | On the expiration date, we send an Expired Domain Name Notification email to the registrant. The domain can be renewed manually at no extra cost for the next 36 days. |
Day 37 | The domain enters the Redemption Grace Period for 30 days. During this period, the registrant can renew the domain for a $53 redemption fee. |
Day 67 | The domain is returned to the registry, and all services associated with it are canceled. |
Renewal Grace Period and Redemption Period
- The Renewal Grace Period lasts until the 36th day after expiration, during which the registrant can renew the domain at no extra cost.
- After this period, the domain enters the Redemption Grace Period from days 37 to 67, during which the original registrant can redeem the domain by paying a $53 redemption fee.
- On the 67th day after expiration, the domain name is returned to the registry for eventual release to the general public.
Microvera’s Process for Handling Expired Domains
The process for handling expired domain names depends on the domain extension and renewal settings.
1. Automatic Renewal
- If your domain is set to automatically renew, we will attempt to charge your account 30 days prior to expiration to renew your domain.
- If the payment is successful, the domain is automatically renewed.
2. Manual Renewal
- If your domain is set to manually renew, you will need to renew it before expiration to avoid interruption.
Steps After Expiration:
- Day 0: On the expiration date, we send a notification email. You can manually renew the domain name.
- Day 37: The domain enters the Redemption Grace Period. At this stage, you can renew the domain, but it is subject to the $53 redemption fee.
- Day 67: The domain is canceled, and all associated services are deleted. The domain is then returned to the registry for eventual release.
Registry Hold
After the 67th day, the registry may hold the domain name for an additional period before making it available for general registration.
By understanding this policy, you can ensure timely renewal of your domain names to avoid additional fees or loss of ownership. For further assistance, please contact our support team.
